Whygo2 Amsterdam
Letsgo2 employees have travelled extensively to the destinations we feature. Here are the five main reasons they would consider a visit to Amsterdam.
Art
Museums are the main tourist attraction in Amsterdam with over fifty museums attracting millions of visitors each year. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum are the most popular choices among tourists. A visit to the Van Gogh Museum is a unique experience, home to more than 200 paintings and 550 sketches the Van Gogh Museum expresses Van Gogh in all his moods. The Rijksmuseum is the largest museum in the Netherlands and houses an unrivalled collection of Dutch art, from early religious works to the masterpieces of the Golden Age. The Stedelijk Museum is home to the citys modern and contemporary art, dedicated to modern art from the nineteenth century till the present day it features the works of Picasso and Monet.
Things to see
The House of Anne Frank is very popular amongst tourists. For more than two years Anne Frank and her family lived in the annex of the building during the war until their hiding place was discovered in August 1944 and the family were deported to various concentration camps. Quotations from her diary, historical documents, photography and original objects illustrate the events that took place here and visitors can go on a virtual journey through the house. There many other interesting sites and monuments creating part of the Amsterdam experience including the Oude Kerk and the Dam Square which is the heart and soul of Amsterdam.
Canals and Vondelpark
The enormous number of canals in Amsterdam has led to it being frequently referred to as the Venice of the North. A trip to Amsterdam is not complete without a boat journey down one of the citys canals. A canal-tour can be relaxing by day giving you an insight to the city and romantic by night when many of the houses and bridges are illuminated. Vondelpark is the largest city park in Amsterdam and certainly the most famous in the Netherlands. It is named after the famous local poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel, a sculpture of whom stands in the park. Loved by locals as well as tourists it is full of people walking their dogs, roller-skating, jogging, listening to music or just lazing about on the grass. Free concerts are performed at the open-air theatre and at the parks bandstand during the summer months of June, July and August.
Nightlife and Entertainment
Amsterdam offers a diverse array of entertainment from theatres and music concerts to the famous cafe culture and red light district. Leidseplein is the centre of Amsterdams nightlife with some of the citys most popular restaurants, bars and nightspots perfectly located around the square. For the liberal minded individuals who are not easily offended Amsterdams famous Red Light District is well worth visiting and a visit to Amsterdam would not be complete without taken lunch in one of Amsterdams famous Cafes....
Food and Drink
A wide range of both local and international cuisine is on offer in Amsterdam, from elegant 17th century dining rooms to cosy canal side bistros there is something to suit all budgets. The Leidseplein is a popular place to hang out with plenty of good restaurants and bars; relax and enjoy a drink while you enjoy street musicians, jugglers and fire eaters entertaining the square. Make sure you visit the traditional brown cafes of Amsterdam, sit yourself down amongst the smoke stained walls for a beer or a jenever (gin) and you will soon find yourself chatting with an amiable Amsterdammer.
